چکیده

Recent work has focused on generating synthetic imagery and augmenting real imagery to increase the size and variability of training data for learning visual tasks in urban scenes. This includes increasing the occurrence of occlusions or varying environmental and weather effects. However, few have addressed modeling the variation in the sensor domain. Unfortunately, varying sensor effects can degrade performance and generalizability of results for visual tasks trained on human annotated datasets. This paper proposes an efficient, automated physicallybased augmentation pipeline to vary sensor effects – specifically, chromatic aberration, blur, exposure, noise, and color cast – across both real and synthetic imagery. In particular, this paper illustrates that augmenting training datasets with the proposed pipeline improves the robustness and generalizability of object detection on a variety of benchmark vehicle datasets.

Play and Learn: Using Video Games to Train Computer Vision Models

Video games are a compelling source of annotated data as they can readily provide fine-grained groundtruth for diverse tasks. However, it is not clear whether the synthetically generated data has enough resemblance to the real-world images to improve the performance of computer vision models in practice. We present experiments assessing the effectiveness on real-world data of systems trained on...

Interactive Common Illumination for Computer Augmented Reality

The advent of computer augmented reality (CAR), in which computer generated objects mix with real video images, has resulted in many interesting new application domains. Providing common illumination between the real and synthetic objects can be very beneficial, since the additional visual cues (shadows, interreflections etc.) are critical to seamless real-synthetic world integration. Building ...

Using Genetic Algorithms in Computer Vision: Registering Images to 3D Surface Model

This paper shows a successful application of genetic algorithms in computer vision. We aim at building photorealistic 3D models of real-world objects by adding textural information to the geometry. In this paper we focus on the 2D–3D registration problem: given a 3D geometric model of an object, and optical images of the same object, we need to find the precise alignment of the 2D images to the...

Procedural Modeling and Physically Based Rendering for Synthetic Data Generation in Automotive Applications

We present an overview and evaluation of a new, systematic approach for generation of highly realistic, annotated synthetic data for training of deep neural networks in computer vision tasks. The main contribution is a procedural world modeling approach enabling high variability coupled with physically accurate image synthesis, and is a departure from the hand-modeled virtual worlds and approxi...

Fast and Stable Tracking for AR fusing Video and Inertial Sensor Data

Accurate acquisition of camera position and orientation is crucial for realistic augmentations of camera images. Computer vision based tracking algorithms, using the camera itself as sensor, are known to be very accurate but also time-consuming. The integration of inertial sensor data provides a camera pose update at 100 Hz and therefore stability and robustness against rapid motion and occlusi...
